Gutter Clearing and Flushing in Rensselaer

We clear your gutters and downspouts by hand, flush every run with water, and check why the water was backing up in the first place. A gutter that overflows from a clogged elbow needs different attention than one that overflows from a sagging hanger.

Clear Gutters, and a Straight Answer About Why They Overflowed

A gutter has one job: catch roof runoff and carry it to a downspout that discharges away from your foundation. When leaves, maple seeds, pine needles and shingle grit pack into the trough or the downspout elbow, water spills over the front edge and lands right against the house.

Most overflow is debris. Some of it is not. A run that has lost its slope toward the outlet, a hanger that has pulled loose from the fascia, or a downspout crushed at the bottom elbow will keep spilling even after the trough is spotless. So we clear first, then test with water and watch where it actually goes.

You get gutters that drain, plus photos of anything we found that clearing alone will not fix.

What Each Gutter Visit Includes

Every trough cleared by hand
Debris is scooped out by hand and bagged, not blown across your beds and walk. We scrape loose the packed sediment on the trough floor, since that layer holds water and wears out the seams faster.
Downspouts and elbows flushed
Water goes through every outlet and downspout. Blockages tend to sit at the top outlet or the bottom elbow, and we clear them from whichever end gives the best reach.
Water test on every run
Once the trough is empty, we pour water in at the high end and follow it. Any puddle that stays put marks a spot where the slope has gone flat or backward.
Hangers and seams inspected
We check hangers, end caps and corner miters for rust, gaps and loose fasteners. Anything needing repair gets photographed and shown to you rather than passed over.
Working around roofline lights
When permanent lighting is already mounted on your fascia or drip edge, we work around its track and fixtures so none of it is bumped out of line.
Cleanup on the ground
Anything that falls while we work is raked up and bagged, and flush spatter is rinsed from the siding and windows beneath the gutters.

Signs Your Gutters Need Attention

  • Water sheeting over the front lip

If rain pours over the edge instead of exiting the downspout, something is blocking flow. Where it spills tells us a lot: at a corner usually means a clog, mid-run often points to a sag.

  • Seedlings or moss in the trough

Plants only grow where organic matter has sat wet for months. By then the debris layer is thick enough to hold water against the metal.

  • Dark streaks on the fascia or siding

Stripes running down from the gutter mean water is escaping behind or over it. Left alone, that keeps fascia boards damp and invites rot.

  • A gutter pulling away from the house

Wet debris is heavy. A trough loaded with soaked leaves and needles can pull hangers loose, and the sag then traps even more water.

  • Ice buildup along the eaves in winter

Clogged gutters freeze solid during freeze-thaw cycles, which adds weight and can back meltwater under the shingle edge. Clearing them before the first hard freeze lowers that risk.

  • Soggy ground or erosion at the downspout

Washed-out mulch or pooling near the foundation can mean the downspout is clogged and water is spilling at the top instead of draining at the bottom.

How a Gutter Visit Runs

  1. 1

    Perimeter walk

We walk the house from the ground first, noting overflow stains, sagging sections, downspout locations and any roofline lighting. That tells us where to look hardest once we are up top.

  2. 2

    Ladder setup and clearing

Ladders are set with standoffs so they rest on the roof or wall, not on the gutter itself, which keeps the trough from denting. Then each run is cleared by hand and the debris bagged.

  3. 3

    Flush and diagnose

We flush every downspout and run water along each trough. Clogs get cleared, and any spot where water stalls, leaks at a seam or drips behind the gutter gets marked and photographed.

  4. 4

    Walkthrough of findings

Before we leave, we show you the photos and explain what we saw: draining well, or draining but with a loose hanger, a low spot or a seam that needs sealing. You decide what, if anything, happens next.

What Affects the Price of Clearing Your Gutters

We price gutter clearing from your actual house, not a flat guess. The main drivers are how much gutter there is, how hard it is to reach and how much is packed inside. Call and we will go over your home and give you a free quote by phone.

Linear footage and number of downspouts
A ranch with two short runs takes far less time than a house with wraparound gutters, several corners and six or more downspouts to flush.
Height and roof pitch
Second- and third-story gutters need taller ladders and more careful setup. Steep roofs or gutters over decks, slopes and plantings add time.
How long since the last visit
A season of leaves is quick work. Several years of compacted sediment, seedlings and pine needles takes longer to scrape out and bag.
Gutter guards
Screens and covers have to come off and go back on, and debris often collects on top of them and in the gap behind them.
Stubborn downspout clogs
Most clear with water. A downspout packed solid along its full length, or one that empties into an underground drain line, can take extra work to diagnose.

Common Gutter and Downspout Questions

Something not covered here? (518) 535-7833

How often do my gutters need clearing?

For most homes, two visits work well: late fall once the leaves are down, and late spring after the maple seeds and pollen fall. Houses under tall trees may need a third. After one visit we can tell you how quickly yours fill up.

Why do my gutters spill over when they look clear?

Then the trouble is usually how the water moves, not visible debris. Typical culprits are a blocked downspout elbow, a run that no longer slopes toward its outlet, or a downspout too small for the roof it serves. Our flow test points to the actual cause.

Do you repair gutters as well?

Our visit covers clearing and inspection. When we spot a loose hanger, a leaky seam or a low section, we take a photo and explain it, so you know just what needs work and why.

Could the work harm my roofline lights?

No. Before starting we note where the track and fixtures run, and we keep tools and ladders away from them. If you plan to add permanent exterior lighting installation, clean, well-hung gutters give it a better line to mount on.

Do I have to be home while you work?

Not as long as we can get to every side of the house and an outside spigot for flushing. Plenty of homeowners stay for the walkthrough to see the photos, but we can just as easily review what we found by phone later.
